Phonte – Charity Starts At Home [Album Review]

New Tigallo, New Tigallo, New Tigallo. After over 10 years in the game, The Conscious Tip fav Phonte has finally released his solo album, Charity Starts At Home. The album is everything we expected and much more. On this one there’s nothing but strong Hip Hop lyrics and punchlines supplied by Tigallo (sorry autotune & dougie fans). Primarily rapping throughout the project, on a few tracks he still returns to the melodic vocals known for in his recent Foreign Exchange days. Even though it’s his first album, the vibe from some of the songs may sound familiar to you. That’s because former Little Brother member 9th Wonder produced 4 tracks on the project. I immediately was brought back to the feel of The Minstrel Show when I heard The Life Of Kings, which features Evidence & Big K.R.I.T. Some other notable appearances on the album include Pharoahe Monch, Elzhi, Eric Roberson & Carlitta Durand. Overall, Charity Starts At Home is a good listen, and definitely worth the purchase. As a hardcore Foreign Exchange fan I’m biased, but any sane person should understand Phonte is an example of where the state of Hip Hop should be at.
